He was an assistant cameraman and editor for the comedy series Racket Squad, and directed the low-budget boxing melodrama Leather Gloves. Soon, Asher’s talents were drawn to the small screen, producing a series of musical pictures with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. In the early 60s, he directed episodes of Racket Squad and Big Town, and he also made his screen debut in “I Love Lucy,” the show that launched his career.
In the late 1950s, Asher met his future wife, Elizabeth Montgomery, and the two got married. After a short period in New York, they moved to Los Angeles and Asher began writing short stories. A few years later, he and Quine partnered on “Leather Gloves” for Columbia, and Asher made his directorial debut on the show. After his marriage, Asher went into television, first as a writer and later as a director.
